Their Story
Nicholas George Xiarhos, known to many as 'Nick', was a dedicated Marine from Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts. Born into a family deeply rooted in community service, he followed a path of commitment and duty. Joining the United States Marine Corps, he was assigned to Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade Forward, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Cpl. Xiarhos was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict initiated in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The operation sought to dismantle terrorist networks and bring stability to the region. His deployment was marked by the intense challenges and unpredictable nature of warfare.
Tragically, on July 23, 2009, Xiarhos's life was cut short during a hostile incident at Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. The Department of Defense confirmed his death, marking a profound loss for his family, community, and fellow Marines.
