Workman, Jason Ray
Jason Ray Workman, an American Navy SEAL from Blanding, Utah, died at age 32 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, on August 6, 2011, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Jason Ray Workman was born in the town of Blanding, Utah, where he grew up before pursuing a career in the military. He became an active-duty member of the United States Navy and served as a Chief Petty Officer in the elite Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six.
On August 6, 2011, Workman was deployed in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. This conflict, which began on October 7, 2001, followed the September 11 attacks and marked a significant international military campaign.
Tragically, Workman lost his life in a hostile incident during this operation. The event occurred when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was aboard was shot down by insurgents, leading to the deaths of 30 U.S. service members.
Workman's death was part of the single deadliest incident for U.S. forces in the decade-long conflict in Afghanistan. His passing was a somber moment for the military community and his hometown of Blanding, Utah.
Operation Enduring Freedom officially concluded in December 2014, but the impact of the conflict, including the loss of individuals like Workman, continues to be felt by families and communities across the United States.
