Zarian Andre Wood, a 29-year-old American Navy sailor from Houston, Texas, died on May 16, 2010, due to hostile action at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Petty Officer Third Class Zarian Andre Wood, a sailor in the United States Navy, was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Wood served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Division Forward, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.

On May 16, 2010, Wood was killed in a hostile encounter at Bagram Air Field, a strategically significant location during the U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. His death marked a somber moment in the extended conflict, which had begun in response to the September 11 attacks and continued through December 2014.

Operation Enduring Freedom, initiated on October 7, 2001, involved U.S. and allied forces aiming to dismantle terrorist organizations and prevent future attacks. Wood's service in Afghanistan was part of these broader efforts, which also extended to regions such as the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

Wood's passing is a reminder of the human cost of military engagements. Each individual who loses their life in conflict leaves behind family, friends, and a community that mourns their loss. In honoring his memory, we acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices made by those who serve in the armed forces.
