Sergeant Jeannette Lee Winters served in the United States Marine Corps, attached to the Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, part of Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Winters was among the first female combat casualties in the U.S. military's Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 9, 2002, Winters and six other Marines were killed when a KC-130 refueling aircraft crashed in the vicinity of Shamsi, Pakistan. The crash represented a significant loss for the Marine Corps, marking one of the deadliest incidents for the unit during the early stages of the operation.
Operation Enduring Freedom commenced on October 7, 2001, following the September 11 attacks, with the aim of dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. It was the longest conflict involving United States forces, concluding in December 2014.
