Their Story
First Lieutenant Derwin Isaac Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he would later reside before his deployment to Afghanistan. Serving with the Army National Guard, Williams was assigned to Company A, 33rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion based in Marseilles, Illinois.
In 2009, Williams was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military operation launched in response to the September 11 attacks. By this time, the conflict had entered a challenging phase with increased insurgent activity and growing threats from improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
On July 6, 2009, Williams was killed in Khanabad, a district in Afghanistan's Kunduz Province. His death was confirmed by the Department of Defense as a result of hostile action. This period saw intense engagements with Taliban forces, who had been regrouping and intensifying their operations.
