Their Story
Corporal Anthony Lee Williams served in the United States Marine Corps as part of the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit was deployed as part of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force in Afghanistan.
On March 22, 2009, Williams was killed in Now Zad, Afghanistan, during hostile actions. The region, part of Helmand Province, was an area of significant military activity during Operation Enduring Freedom. His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the same day.
Williams, originally from Oxford, Pennsylvania, was one of many American service members deployed to Afghanistan as part of efforts to counter insurgent forces. The town of Now Zad had been a focal point for military operations due to its strategic importance.
