Their Story

Justin James Wilkens served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, a member of the 34th Special Operations Squadron based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Born and raised in Bend, Oregon, Wilkens was part of the elite unit known for its specialized and demanding missions.

Wilkens had been deployed to various regions, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa, as part of the wider efforts under Operation Enduring Freedom. This operation was launched in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001, and aimed to dismantle terrorist networks.

On February 18, 2012, Wilkens was killed in action at Camp Lemonnier, a key U.S. military base in Djibouti, strategically located in the Horn of Africa. His death was a significant loss to his squadron and his family.

Operation Enduring Freedom officially concluded in December 2014, marking the end of one of the longest military engagements involving the United States. Wilkens' death is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel during this period.
