Their Story

LTC James Leon Wiley Jr was born and raised in North Bend, Oregon, where he developed a strong sense of duty and service. He joined the United States Army, eventually becoming a lieutenant colonel, serving with the 27th Infantry Regiment based in Syracuse, New York.

During his military career, Wiley was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a response to the September 11 attacks. This operation sought to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. It was under these circumstances that Wiley found himself stationed at Bagram Airfield, a major hub for American military operations.

On September 18, 2008, Wiley was killed in action at Bagram Airfield. His death marked a solemn moment as he became one of the 2,356 American service members who lost their lives during this conflict. His passing at the age of 46 was a significant loss to his family, his unit, and those who served alongside him.

The mission Wiley was part of, Operation Enduring Freedom, officially concluded on December 28, 2014. The operation spanned over 13 years and involved numerous American and coalition forces.
