PFC Matthew Everett Wildes, 18, from Hammond, LA, served in the U.S. Army, Company B, 1-12 Infantry, and died on August 27, 2009, in Maywand District, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Matthew Everett Wildes, a Private First Class in the United States Army, became part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Born and raised in Hammond, Louisiana, Wildes joined Company B, 1-12 Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Task Force Mountain Warrior. His service led him to the challenging terrain and complex dynamics of Maywand District.

On August 27, 2009, PFC Wildes lost his life in this area due to hostile actions. At the age of 18, his life was tragically cut short during a period when insurgent activities were intensifying in the region. The conflict in Afghanistan, which began in October 2001, presented significant and evolving challenges to coalition forces.

The Maywand District, located in the Kandahar Province, was known for its strategic importance and the presence of Taliban forces, making it a focal point in the ongoing military operations during that time. Wildes' unit, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, was actively engaged in efforts to stabilize the region.

His death is a somber reminder of the human cost of conflict and the dangers faced by military personnel serving in overseas operations. Each loss resonates deeply within the communities they leave behind, as well as among their fellow servicemen and women. Wildes' sacrifice is remembered as part of the broader narrative of those who served in Operation Enduring Freedom.

The conflict in Afghanistan officially concluded in December 2014, marking the end of one of the longest military engagements involving the United States. However, the impact of the war continues to be felt by many, including the families of those like Wildes who were lost.
