Their Story
Captain Daniel Preston Whitten, a dedicated serviceman from Grimes, Iowa, was a member of the U.S. Army, serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a military operation initiated in response to the September 11 attacks.
On February 2, 2010, Captain Whitten lost his life due to hostile actions in the vicinity of Forward Operating Base Sweeney in Afghanistan. His death marked a somber moment among the ranks of those who served alongside him, as well as for his family and community back home.
Operation Enduring Freedom, which began on October 7, 2001, sought to dismantle terrorist networks and eliminate threats to global security.
