Their Story

Justin Michael Whitmire, a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, hailed from Easley, South Carolina. He was part of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. His service took him to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On December 27, 2011, at the age of 20, Whitmire was killed in Gardez, Afghanistan. His death was classified as resulting from hostile circumstances, a term used by the Department of Defense to indicate that the death was the result of enemy action. This tragic event was confirmed by the Department of Defense shortly thereafter.

Operation Enduring Freedom, which started on October 7, 2001, was a U.S.-led combat operation launched in response to the September 11 attacks. The operation continued until December 2014, with its main focus being the dismantling of terrorist groups and the stabilization of the region.

Whitmire's sacrifice is one among those of many servicemen and women who were deployed to Afghanistan during this period. His service reflects the commitment of young individuals who left their homes to serve in complex and challenging environments abroad.

The town of Easley, SC, and his family mourned the loss of a young life dedicated to service at such an early age. Whitmire's passing is remembered as part of the broader narrative of Operation Enduring Freedom and its impact on families across the United States.
