CPL Joseph Charles Whitehead was an American Marine from Axis, Alabama, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 22. He was serving with the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, part of the 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On January 17, 2011, CPL Whitehead was killed by hostile action in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His death came amidst Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks. Whitehead was among the 2,356 American service members who lost their lives during this operation.
