Their Story
Joseph Valere White was a Specialist in the United States Army, serving with Company B, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Lewis, Washington. Born and raised in Bellevue, Washington, White joined the military with a commitment to serve his country.
He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a mission launched in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks with the objective of dismantling terrorist organizations and removing the Taliban from power. White's unit was among those tasked with operating in the challenging terrains and complex combat environment of Afghanistan.
On September 24, 2009, at just 21 years old, Specialist White lost his life in Omar Zai, Afghanistan, due to hostile action. His death was part of the broader human toll endured during the lengthy and complex conflict in the region.
