Their Story
Specialist Jonathan David Welch, an American soldier from Yorba Linda, California, was part of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Lewis, Washington. At just 19, Welch found himself deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a military campaign initiated in response to the September 11 attacks.
Welch's unit was involved in efforts to stabilize regions affected by insurgency. On August 31, 2009, during operations in Shuyene-Sufia, Afghanistan, SPC Welch lost his life to hostile actions. The United States Army reported his death, marking a solemn day for his unit and family.
