James Matthew Weis, a 37-year-old Marine Corps Major from Toms River, NJ, died on July 22, 2010, in Trek Nawa, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

James Matthew Weis was born in Toms River, New Jersey, and dedicated a significant part of his life to serving in the United States Marine Corps. Rising to the rank of Major, he was stationed with Marine Aircraft Group 39, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Camp Pendleton, California.

In July 2010, Major Weis was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a military campaign initiated in October 2001 in response to the events of September 11. The operation sought to dismantle terrorist networks and stabilize the region.

Tragically, on July 22, 2010, Major Weis lost his life in Trek Nawa, a location within Afghanistan's Helmand Province. The Marine Corps reported his death as a result of hostile action, underscoring the inherent dangers faced by service members in active conflict zones.

Major Weis's passing was a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel during the protracted conflict. His loss resonated deeply with his unit, family, and community, who mourned the death of a dedicated officer and a beloved individual.

Operation Enduring Freedom itself was a prolonged campaign, concluding in December 2014. The conflict left a lasting impact on both the region and the lives of those involved, including the family and friends of those like Major Weis.
