Their Story

Christopher Ian Walz was a Private First Class in the United States Army, serving with the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, part of the 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Hailing from Vancouver, Washington, PFC Walz was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a mission initiated in response to the events of September 11, 2001.

On October 27, 2009, PFC Walz was killed in the Arghandab River Valley in Afghanistan. The U.S. Army recorded his death as hostile, indicating that he died in combat-related circumstances. The Arghandab River Valley was known as a volatile region during this period, with increasing insurgent activity as the Taliban sought to regain control.

Walz's unit, Task Force Stryker, was engaged in operations aimed at stabilizing the area and countering the insurgency. The challenges faced by his unit were emblematic of the broader conflict in Afghanistan, where IED attacks had become a common threat to coalition forces.

PFC Walz's service and sacrifice are remembered by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. His death at the age of 25 is a stark reminder of the human cost of military conflict and the enduring impact on those who serve and their loved ones.
