LTC James Joseph Walton, an American from Rockville, MD, died on June 21, 2008, in Kandahar City, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

Lieutenant Colonel James Joseph Walton served in the United States Army as part of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division based at Fort Riley, Kansas. Born and raised in Rockville, Maryland, Walton dedicated much of his life to military service, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

On June 21, 2008, Walton was killed in a hostile incident in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. He was 41 years old at the time of his death. This event occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military intervention in Afghanistan aimed at dismantling the Taliban and al-Qaeda networks following the September 11 attacks.

His death was part of a broader conflict that claimed the lives of 2,356 American service members over the course of 13 years. Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001 and concluded in December 2014.

The loss of LTC Walton was felt deeply by his family, fellow soldiers, and the community he left behind. His commitment to his country and his role in the U.S. Army exemplified the dedication of many who served in the same conflict.
