Their Story

Sergeant Zachary Joe Walters was born in Palm Coast, Florida, and served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Walters was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a military operation initiated in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The operation aimed to dismantle terrorist networks in Afghanistan and lasted until December 2014.

On June 8, 2010, Walters was killed during a hostile incident in Helmand Province, a region that saw significant conflict during the operation. He was 24 years old at the time of his death.

SGT Walters was one of the 2,356 American service members who lost their lives in Operation Enduring Freedom. His sacrifice is remembered alongside his fellow soldiers who served with dedication and courage.

Helmand Province was a focal point of military operations during the conflict, with efforts concentrated on stabilizing the region and combating insurgent activity. The province remains emblematic of the challenges faced by coalition forces in Afghanistan.
