Their Story
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Matthew Gabriel Wagstaff hailed from Orem, Utah, and served with Company B, 5th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His military career included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Wagstaff was part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a U.S.-led campaign initiated in October 2001. The mission aimed to dismantle terrorist operations in Afghanistan and stabilize the region.
On September 21, 2010, Wagstaff was killed in action in Qalat, Zabul Province, Afghanistan. His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System.
Wagstaff's passing occurred during a period of increased military activity in Afghanistan. The U.S. had deployed additional forces in an effort to secure gains before a planned drawdown.
