SSG William David Vile, 27, of Philadelphia, PA, served in the U.S. Army's Company D, 2nd Battalion, 29th Infantry. He died on May 1, 2009, in Barialai, Afghanistan.

Their Story

William David Vile, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, a unit stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. His commitment to military service took him to Afghanistan as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001, was a response to the September 11 attacks. It aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. The conflict saw American troops deployed to Afghanistan, where they engaged in combat operations against insurgents.

On May 1, 2009, at the age of 27, SSG Vile was killed in Barialai, Afghanistan. The U.S. Army recorded his death as a result of hostile action. His passing occurred during a time when insurgent activities, including IED attacks, were prevalent in the region.

SSG Vile's death is a reminder of the perils faced by military personnel serving in conflict zones. His service and sacrifice are remembered by those who knew him and by the broader community of veterans and active-duty members.

The conflict in Afghanistan, known as Operation Enduring Freedom, officially ended in December 2014. However, the impact of the war continues to be felt by many, including the families of those who served.
