SSG Jason Anthony Vazquez, 24, from Chicago, IL, served with Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery, Illinois National Guard, and died on September 17, 2008, south of FOB Gardez, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jason Anthony Vazquez was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he later joined the Illinois National Guard. He served with Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery, based in Sycamore, Illinois. Vazquez's military career took him to various locations, including deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

Vazquez was involved in Operation Enduring Freedom, a campaign initiated by the United States and its allies in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The operation aimed to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent future attacks. By 2008, the mission had been ongoing for seven years, with American forces engaging in numerous operations across Afghanistan.

On September 17, 2008, Vazquez was operating south of Forward Operating Base Gardez in Afghanistan. During a hostile encounter, he tragically lost his life at the age of 24. His death was confirmed by the Department of Defense and marked a somber moment for his unit and family back home.

Vazquez's service and dedication are remembered by those who knew him and serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict. His sacrifice, along with others, underscores the challenges faced by service members during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom officially concluded in December 2014, marking the end of a significant chapter in the United States' military involvement in Afghanistan, although its impact continues to be felt.
