Their Story

CPL Julio Vargas was a member of the United States Marine Corps, serving in the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, CA.

Born in Sylmar, California, Vargas dedicated his young life to service. His commitment took him across the globe, including deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On July 20, 2010, at the age of 23, CPL Vargas lost his life in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His death was recorded by the Marine Corps as resulting from hostile action.

Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001, was a long-lasting military operation in response to the September 11 attacks. It officially concluded in December 2014.

The loss of CPL Julio Vargas is a solemn reminder of the human cost of conflict. His sacrifice is honoured and remembered by family, friends, and fellow service members.
