SGT Alexander Van Aalten, an American soldier from Monterey, TN, died at 21 on April 20, 2007, in Sangin, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
SGT Alexander Van Aalten was born and raised in Monterey, Tennessee. At the age of 21, he served as a sergeant in the United States Army. He was part of Company D, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Van Aalten's deployment to Afghanistan was under Operation Enduring Freedom, a military campaign launched in response to the September 11 attacks. This operation began on October 7, 2001, with a broad coalition of forces aiming to dismantle terrorist networks in the region.
On April 20, 2007, while on duty in Sangin, Afghanistan, Sgt. Van Aalten became one of the many soldiers affected by the hostile conditions in the area. His death was a significant loss to his family, comrades, and community back in Tennessee.
The 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry, known for its strong esprit de corps, undoubtedly felt the impact of losing a dedicated member. Van Aalten's commitment and service to his unit and country were honored by those he served alongside.
