Lance Corporal Steven Armando Valdez was a member of the United States Marine Corps, serving with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Born in McRae, Arkansas, Valdez was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a mission initiated in October 2001.
On September 26, 2005, Valdez was stationed at Camp Blessing in Afghanistan. During this period, the region was marked by heightened conflict as the Taliban had regained strength, leading to increased hostilities and numerous attacks on coalition forces.
