Thomson, Kevin Christopher
Kevin Christopher Thomson, an American PFC from Reno, NV, died on October 3, 2009, at age 22 in COP Keating, Afghanistan, serving in the U.S. Army.
Their Story
Private First Class Kevin Christopher Thomson served with distinction in the U.S. Army's Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry, 4th Brigade Combat Team. Stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, Thomson was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001.
On October 3, 2009, in the remote outpost of COP Keating in Afghanistan, Thomson and his unit experienced one of the deadliest engagements of the war. The outpost was attacked by insurgents, resulting in a fierce battle that led to the loss of several American soldiers, including Thomson.
The events at COP Keating were part of a larger military effort to stabilize the region and counter insurgent activities. The outpost, located in Nuristan province, was strategically important yet vulnerable, surrounded by steep mountains that provided cover for attackers.
In the aftermath, the Army recorded Thomson's cause of death as hostile, a stark reminder of the dangerous and unpredictable nature of military service in conflict zones.
Thomson's sacrifice is a poignant reflection of the many personal stories of courage and commitment that defined Operation Enduring Freedom, which concluded in December 2014.
