Their Story
Sergeant First Class (SFC) Matthew Bradford Thomas was born and raised in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. He joined the United States Army National Guard, committing himself to service within the 133rd Military Police Company, part of the 51st Military Police Battalion under the 59th Troop Command, based in Florence, South Carolina.
Thomas participated in Operation Enduring Freedom, a military operation initiated in October 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks, aimed at dismantling terrorist networks in Afghanistan. His role within the military police unit was crucial in maintaining security and order, both for military personnel and Afghan civilians.
On June 20, 2012, SFC Thomas was killed in Khowst City, Afghanistan, as a result of hostile actions. His death was part of the larger human cost borne by the United States in its efforts during the operation. The loss was felt deeply by his community, family, and fellow servicemen and women.
Thomas was one of the 2,356 American lives lost in Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that continued until its conclusion in December 2014. His service and sacrifice are remembered with respect and solemnity.
