Their Story
Joseph James Theinert was born in Sag Harbor, New York, and dedicated himself to military service by joining the National Guard. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in Troop B, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team stationed at Fort Drum, NY.
On June 4, 2010, Theinert lost his life in Afghanistan, approximately 11 kilometers southwest of Kandahar Airfield. He was 24 years old at the time of his death. The cause was documented as hostile action during Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001.
Operation Enduring Freedom was a significant military campaign initiated by the United States in response to the September 11 attacks. It aimed to dismantle Al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. The conflict continued until December 2014.
