Cpl Jacob Allen Tate, 21, from Columbus, Ohio, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed in action on January 2, 2011, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Cpl Jacob Allen Tate was a member of the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Tate was one of many young Americans deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, a mission initiated in response to the events of September 11, 2001.

During his deployment, Tate was stationed in Helmand Province, a region that saw significant conflict throughout the war. On January 2, 2011, at the age of 21, Tate's life was tragically cut short by hostile action. His death was formally recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the same day, marking another somber entry in the long list of those who perished in the conflict.

Tate's service and sacrifice are a reminder of the perils faced by military personnel deployed in combat zones. His role in the Marine Corps involved operations across various regions including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

The Helmand Province, where Tate lost his life, was a focal point of military strategy during Operation Enduring Freedom. Efforts to stabilize the area were ongoing, but the challenges posed by insurgent activity made it a perilous environment for coalition forces.

Operation Enduring Freedom officially concluded in December 2014, marking the end of a protracted conflict that had significant impacts on both military personnel and civilian populations in the region.
