Staff Sergeant Paul Anthony Sweeney, a member of Company A, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, which commenced on October 7, 2001. Born and raised in Lakeville, Pennsylvania, Sweeney was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before his deployment.

On October 30, 2003, at the age of 32, Sweeney died in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His death was categorized as a result of hostile actions. Sweeney's service in the army took him to various operational theaters, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
