Their Story

LCpl Steven Gene Sutton hailed from Leesburg, Georgia, and was a member of the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, part of the 2nd Marine Division stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His dedication to service took him to various regions, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On May 26, 2012, LCpl Sutton was killed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His death was recorded as a result of hostile action during Operation Enduring Freedom. At the time of his passing, he was 24 years old.

Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001 as a response to the September 11 attacks and aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. The conflict, which involved numerous allied nations, concluded in December 2014.

Steven's name was added to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, acknowledging his sacrifice. The impact of his loss was deeply felt by his family, friends, and fellow Marines.
