Their Story

SGT Jeremy Russell Summers, an active duty member of the U.S. Army, served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His service brought him to Afghanistan, a central battleground in Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 14, 2011, Summers was reportedly killed in Pirkwoti Valley, Afghanistan, in a hostile incident, according to the Department of Defense. The Pirkwoti Valley, located in a region often fraught with conflict, was the site of numerous engagements during the operation.

Summers was 27 years old at the time of his death. He hailed from Mount Olivet, a small community in Kentucky, where his loss was felt by family, friends, and fellow servicemen and women.

Operation Enduring Freedom began on October 7, 2001, as part of the U.S. response to the events of September 11, 2001. Summers' sacrifice was one among many in a conflict that saw extensive deployment of U.S. forces.

The operation ultimately concluded on December 28, 2014, after years of sustained military efforts in Afghanistan. Summers' life and service are remembered as part of the broader narrative of those who served during this prolonged conflict.
