Lance Corporal Jonathan Fulton Stroud, an American Marine from Cashion, OK, died at age 20 on July 30, 2009, in Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

Jonathan Fulton Stroud, a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, was deployed with C Company, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, forward-deployed under the 2nd Marine Division. His service took him to various operational theaters including Afghanistan. Stroud hailed from Cashion, Oklahoma, and was stationed out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Stroud was part of the U.S. military's extensive efforts in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict initiated in October 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks. The operation aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. As a combat engineer, Stroud's role would have involved a range of engineering duties, often under hostile conditions.

On July 30, 2009, Stroud was killed in Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, as a result of hostile actions. At the time, Camp Dwyer was a strategic base in the Helmand province, an area of significant military activity. His death is part of the broader narrative of American military casualties during the protracted conflict.

Stroud's passing adds to the somber tally of 2,356 American service members who perished during Operation Enduring Freedom. The human cost of the conflict is remembered with solemnity, as each loss represents a unique story of service and sacrifice.

Operation Enduring Freedom formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to Operation Freedom's Sentinel and a continued NATO presence in the region.
