Their Story

Sergeant First Class James John Stoddard Jr served with distinction in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 504th Infantry, part of Task Force Devil, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On September 30, 2005, SFC Stoddard was killed in action in Gumbaud, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was 29 years old at the time of his death. His deployment to Afghanistan was part of a broader military effort that also saw operations in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001, following the September 11 attacks, and aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. By 2005, the Taliban had regrouped, leading to an increase in improvised explosive device (IED) attacks, which posed a significant threat to coalition forces.

SFC Stoddard's service and sacrifice are remembered with respect and solemnity. He was one of many who faced the dangers of conflict in the region as part of a global effort against terrorism. His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, and comrades.

The U.S. military's presence in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom officially concluded in December 2014, marking the end of a prolonged period of conflict in the region.
