Their Story
Tristan Howard Southworth was a sergeant in the United States Army, serving with the Vermont National Guard's 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. His unit, Company A, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment, was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.
On August 22, 2010, Southworth was operating in the Jajil district of Afghanistan's eastern Paktia province, a region near the border with Pakistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with insurgent forces.
During that engagement, Southworth was killed. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was 21 years old.
Southworth was from the small town of Walden, Vermont. His death was reported by local and national news outlets, which noted his service included previous deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Southworth's death is recorded among the more than 2,300 U.S. service members who died during the operation.
His memorial was held in Vermont, where he was remembered by his community and fellow soldiers. The conflict in which he served lasted for over 13 years.
