Technical Sergeant Kristoffer Michael Solesbee was killed in action on May 26, 2011, in Shorabak district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced that he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. He was 32 years old.
Solesbee was assigned to the 775th Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. Civil engineer squadrons are responsible for construction, utilities, and explosive ordnance disposal, tasks critical to base operations and force protection in a combat zone.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. In 2011, Kandahar province was a focal point for U.S. and NATO operations against Taliban insurgents. The use of improvised explosive devices was the leading cause of coalition casualties at the time.
Solesbee was from Citrus Heights, California. Public records and memorial pages list him as a graduate of San Juan High School. He was survived by his wife and children.
The conflict in which he served, Operation Enduring Freedom, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a training and advisory role.
