Soderlund, Christopher Paul
Sgt. Christopher Paul Soderlund, 23, of Pineville, Louisiana, was a U.S. Army infantryman serving with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Polk.
Their Story
Sgt. Christopher Paul Soderlund was killed in action on July 9, 2011, in the Charkh Bazaar area of Afghanistan's Logar province. The Department of Defense announced that he died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device.
Soderlund was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Polk, Louisiana. His unit, part of the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, was operating in eastern Afghanistan during a period of intense counterinsurgency operations.
A native of Pineville, Louisiana, he was 23 years old at the time of his death. He joined the Army and advanced to the rank of sergeant, indicating leadership responsibilities within his infantry company.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict in which he served concluded in December 2014, when the mission was formally ended.
Soderlund's death was recorded among the more than 2,300 American service members who died in Afghanistan. Each loss represents a distinct story of service and a permanent absence for families and communities.
