Sockalosky, Stephen Coty
Corporal Stephen Coty Sockalosky, 21, of Cordele, Georgia, was a U.S. Marine assigned to 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines. He died on October 6, 2010, from wounds sustained in combat in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Stephen Coty Sockalosky was a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Cordele, Georgia. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward deployed from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
In the fall of 2010, his unit was operating in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, a major center of the Taliban insurgency and a focus of the U.S. troop surge. The battalion was engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations aimed at clearing and holding territory.
According to the Department of Defense, Sockalosky was wounded in action during hostile combat operations. He was subsequently evacuated from Afghanistan for advanced medical treatment.
He was transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a U.S. military hospital that treats the most severely wounded personnel from combat zones. Corporal Sockalosky died of his wounds there on October 6, 2010.
His death was recorded as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict concluded in December 2014, when the mission was formally ended and transitioned to a new operation.
Sockalosky was one of at least 66 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in October 2010, one of the deadliest months of the war for American forces.
