Their Story

Jesse Adam Snow was a specialist in the United States Army, assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, was deployed to eastern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led campaign that began in October 2001.

In late 2010, U.S. and Afghan forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in the mountainous provinces along the Pakistan border. Konar Province, and particularly the Watapur District, was a known area of insurgent activity and a frequent site of combat engagements.

On November 14, 2010, the Department of Defense announced that Spc. Snow died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Watapur District. According to military reports, he was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol. He was 25 years old.

Snow's death was one of more than 400 U.S. service member fatalities in Afghanistan that year, as the conflict approached its peak troop levels. His battalion had arrived in Afghanistan earlier in 2010 for a year-long deployment focused on securing key valleys and supporting local governance.

A native of Fairborn, Ohio, Snow had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa as part of his military service. His awards included the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.

Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a follow-on training and counter-terrorism mission. The conflict in which Snow served lasted for over 13 years.
