Sergeant Stefan Marc Smith was a soldier in the United States Army's 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His unit, Company B, deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.
On July 23, 2013, Smith was killed in the village of Soltan Kheyl, located in Afghanistan's Paktika province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred during a period of sustained combat operations in the volatile eastern region near the Pakistan border.
