Scott Daniel Smith was a sergeant in the Indiana Army National Guard, assigned to the 81st Troop Command based in his hometown of Indianapolis. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 17, 2011, Smith was at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost Province, eastern Afghanistan. The base, a major hub for U.S. and coalition forces near the border with Pakistan, was a frequent target for insurgent attacks.
