Their Story
John Daren Smith served as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of Company B, 5th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment, a unit based out of Utah. His unit was mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in Afghanistan in October 2001.
In early 2003, U.S. forces were building up in the Persian Gulf region ahead of the invasion of Iraq. Camp Udairi, a U.S. Army airfield in northwestern Kuwait, served as a major staging base. Aviation units like Smith's were conducting training and support operations from the camp.
On February 25, 2003, an AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter crashed during a night training mission near Camp Udairi. The Department of Defense confirmed the crash resulted in two fatalities. Smith was one of the two soldiers killed.
The incident occurred less than a month before the start of the Iraq War. Smith's death is officially recorded under Operation Enduring Freedom, as the broader Global War on Terrorism framework encompassed operations in multiple theaters at the time. He was 32 years old.
Smith's death was reported by several news outlets as the first U.S. military fatality in Kuwait during the 2003 buildup. His unit, part of the Utah Army National Guard and Reserve, had been deployed to the region for several months.
He is memorialized on the Utah Veterans Memorial Park website and in the Pentagon's official casualty lists. The conflict in which he served, Operation Enduring Freedom, formally concluded in December 2014.
