Their Story

Staff Sergeant Marc Joseph Small was killed on February 13, 2009, in the village of Faramuz, located in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, he died during combat operations while serving with the 3rd Special Forces Group.

Small, a native of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, was 29 years old. He was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, of the elite unit based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His deployment to Afghanistan was part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.

The operation in Kunar Province, a rugged region along the border with Pakistan, involved frequent engagements with insurgent forces. Details released by the Department of Defense stated only that Small's death was the result of a hostile incident, without specifying the exact circumstances.

His death was recorded among the more than 1,800 U.S. service members who died in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom prior to its conclusion in December 2014. The conflict in the region continued for years after his death under the name Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
