Small, Andrew Richard
U.S. Army Private First Class Andrew Richard Small, 19, of Wiscasset, Maine, was killed in hostile action on August 11, 2006, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment.
Their Story
Private First Class Andrew Richard Small was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was operating in eastern Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.
By August 2006, the conflict had entered a phase marked by a resurgent Taliban insurgency. Violence was escalating, particularly in Afghanistan's eastern provinces, where insurgent attacks and improvised explosive device (IED) incidents were increasing annually.
Small was killed on August 11, 2006, in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from wounds sustained during hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not disclosed in initial reports.
He was 19 years old. A native of Wiscasset, a small town in Maine, Small was one of several American service members to die in Afghanistan during that month. His death occurred as U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counter-insurgency operations ahead of a major Taliban offensive in the spring of 2007.
The conflict, Operation Enduring Freedom, formally concluded in December 2014. Small is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations from his home state.
