Their Story
Staff Sgt. Christopher-kenley Aldric Slutman was a 43-year-old Marine Corps reservist from Newark, Delaware. He was assigned to the 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. According to the Marine Corps, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
Slutman died on April 8, 2019, in Bagram, Parwan Province, Afghanistan. A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated near his convoy. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which also killed two other American service members and a contractor.
Operation Freedom's Sentinel was the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that began in January 2015, succeeding Operation Enduring Freedom. Its stated objectives included training Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism operations. The conflict was part of a broader, nearly two-decade-long U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan.
Following his death, Slutman's body was returned to Dover Air Force Base. The governor of Delaware ordered flags lowered in his honor. The Marine Corps confirmed his awards included the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
Slutman was also a 15-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, serving with Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. Colleagues described him as a dedicated firefighter and Marine. He is survived by his wife and three children.
