Their Story
Antonio James Sledd was a 20-year-old Marine corporal from Tampa, Florida. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, part of the 1st Marine Division and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
In the fall of 2002, Corporal Sledd was stationed at Camp Doha, a major U.S. military logistics hub in Kuwait. The camp served as a critical staging area for operations in Afghanistan and the broader region. At the time, the Taliban had been removed from power in Afghanistan but continued to wage an insurgency.
On October 8, 2002, Corporal Sledd was killed in a hostile incident at Camp Doha. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, the incident involved small arms fire. Another Marine, Lance Corporal George D. Torres, 23, was also killed in the same event. The Pentagon stated the two Marines were shot by a fellow service member, who was subsequently taken into custody.
Corporal Sledd's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. He was one of the early casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom, which formally concluded in December 2014. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the U.S. National Archives.
