Their Story
Sergeant James Lyn Skalberg Jr. was a field artilleryman from Cullman, Alabama. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with Battery B, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Bliss, Texas. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On June 27, 2012, Skalberg was on duty in Logar province, a region south of Kabul known for insurgent activity. The Department of Defense announced that he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire. He was 25 years old.
Skalberg's death occurred during the latter years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was part of ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the volatile eastern provinces.
