Staff Sergeant Matthew S. Sitton was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit deployed to southern Afghanistan in 2012 as part of the later stages of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by intense counterinsurgency operations in rural districts.
According to military reports, Sitton was killed on August 2, 2012, during a dismounted patrol in the Zahary district of Kandahar province. The area was known for its complex terrain and persistent insurgent activity.
