Their Story

Sergeant Robert Curtis Sisson Jr. was a 29-year-old infantryman from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.

On February 21, 2011, Sisson was operating in the village of Saryah Kalach, located in the volatile Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan. The area was a known stronghold for insurgent forces. According to military reports, his unit was engaged in a dismounted patrol when it came under enemy small arms fire.

Sergeant Sisson was killed during that engagement. The Department of Defense announced his death three days later, on February 24, 2011. He was one of at least four U.S. service members reported killed in Afghanistan on that date.

His death occurred during a period of intense fighting as international forces sought to clear and hold key districts in Kandahar. The 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment had been involved in numerous operations in the region throughout its deployment.

Sisson's remains were returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations for his service. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense.

The broader conflict, Operation Enduring Freedom, formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Sergeant Sisson's death is recorded among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during the Operation Enduring Freedom phase of the war in Afghanistan.
