Their Story
Second Lieutenant Justin Lee Sisson deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the United States-led military campaign that began in October 2001. He served with the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, a unit with a storied history dating to World War II, known as the 'Currahees.' His battalion operated in Khost province, a volatile region along Afghanistan's eastern border with Pakistan.
On June 3, 2013, Sisson was killed in Khost. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from a hostile incident involving small arms fire. He was 23 years old. No further operational details of the engagement were publicly released by the military.
Sisson was a graduate of Florida State University, where he was a member of the Army ROTC program. He was commissioned as an infantry officer in 2012. Prior to his deployment to Afghanistan, he had also served on military assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
His death was recorded during the latter years of Operation Enduring Freedom, which formally concluded in December 2014. The conflict in Afghanistan continued under the name Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Sisson was one of more than 2,300 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the war.
Memorials for Sisson were held in Florida and at Fort Campbell. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of North Florida, among other remembrances.
