Their Story

Private First Class Amy Renee Sinkler was assigned to the 109th Transportation Company, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. Her service included deployments to the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In early 2011, she was operating in northern Afghanistan. The city of Mazar-e-Sharif, where she died, was a major logistical hub for coalition forces. At the time, the U.S. troop surge, ordered in late 2009, was at its peak, with forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations across the country.

Sinkler died on January 20, 2011. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, her death was the result of a hostile incident. No further operational details of the event were publicly released by the military.

Her death was recorded during a period of significant violence in the Afghan war. January 2011 saw numerous combat fatalities for international forces, underscoring the persistent danger faced by support and transportation units essential to the war effort.

Pfc. Sinkler was posthumously promoted to Specialist. She is remembered by her family and community in Columbus County, North Carolina, where she was raised.
